Finals dates and AGM

Dates for Finals days and the club AGM have now been set and can be found here.

2012 Finals finally complete

Our 2012 Ladies Singles final was interrupted by an injury to Helen, but last weekend she and Lynda were finally able to reconvene and complete the match. Helen writes:
“Lynda and I did finally manage to conclude our Ladies’ Singles Finals after Club play today with Lynda remaining the Champion. Lynda was in great form and after winning the one point to even up the sets, she quickly finished the third set by beating me 6-0. As we finished quicker than expected, we did play another set in a more relaxed way with Lynda winning this one 7-6 on a tie-break. So even if we had decided to replay the match from the beginning, Lynda would have ended up the winner!”

Leagues latest

Helen provides an update on how our teams are doing in the EH Winter League:

  • Div 3 Ladies A – currently 2nd place, one point behind Headley, both with 2 matches to play, being closely fought to see who goes up to Div 2.
  • Div 4 Ladies B – currently 3rd place with last match played today. Other teams still to play matches so position may change.
  • Div 1 Mixed A – following promotion to the top division we are currently 5th on 28 points having completed all matches. Medstead A are bottom on 20 points with 3 matches still to play so unsure whether we will stay in Div 1 or go back down to Div 2 next Winter.
  • Div 3 Mixed B – one match left to play but will finish bottom.
  • Veterans – all matches played and will finish bottom.

The Club only have 3 matches left to play for the season so well done to the Captains for getting them played so quickly considering the wet winter we have had. A lot of other clubs have experienced problems with matches being rained off.

Finals Day 2012

Helen writes:
The sun was shining, finalists were present, spectators waiting in anticipation. All was perfect and going as I had planned until I dampened things by damaging my hamstring before the conclusion of the 2nd set of the Ladies Singles! Thank you to my physio (Cate) and on call doctor (Tommy Chung) for strapping me up and checking my damage.
Also, a big thank you to Bob for hovering around the courts taking some brilliant action photos (all on the gallery – email Bob for copies) as well as umpiring, along with Barry, Carolyn, Neil, Marc, Sue Halstead and Jenny and thank you to all members who provided some lovely food during the day. Finally, it was lovely to see so many people supporting the day, so thank you to the spectators.

  • Ladies’ Singles Lynda Mott v Helen Shelton was stopped due to injury to Helen. Helen had won the first set 6-4 and Lynda was 5-1 up in the second. Lynda didn’t want to win the Singles by default so play will resume at a later date for the title.
  • Mixed Doubles Jason Mott & Carolyn Della-Rocca v Marc & Helen Shelton – not played due to Helen’s injury. Again, Carolyn and Jason didn’t want the trophy by default and will be played at a later date for the title.

Sun shines on the ‘Spirit of 1952’ tournament

Roy writes:

We had a very enjoyable time going back to 1952 this afternoon . Wooden rackets abounded, thanks to many of you who helped out and dug these treasures out from your lofts – they produced some unexpected shots and on the whole the gut strings stood up surprisingly well to the relentless battering
they got all afternoon. The tournament winning lady was Sue Halstead and the winning man was Bob Machin. Congratulations!!

The tea that awaited those who came along was absolutely fantastic. Thank you all who helped produce such a spread and to Bob in particular who organized the many contributors and even had to put some off to avoid having too much.

Please make a note that our next Mike Hillman tournament will take place on Sunday 10th June at 2.00  p.m. and we look forward to seeing you there.

Didn’t we have a lovely time….

Two photos from NCTC’s  recent Ladies ‘A’  trip to Ventnor on the Isle of Wight  for a H&IOW match.  One by the Hovercraft after arriving in Ryde and the other having a Pimms on the train back from Shanklin to Ryde.  Not celebrating a win, unfortunately, but a great day out in fab weather…

‘Spirit of 1952’ retro tournament

To celebrate the Jubilee weekend, the Club has organised a friendly tournament for all club members, to be played at 2 p.m. on Saturday 2nd June, in the style prevailing in the year of the Queen’s coronation.
Rules of the tournament will be as follows:

  • Competitors will wear whites, or similarly traditional tennis clothing. Old-style tennis shoes preferred.
  • Competitors will play with wooden rackets – these will be be provided by various members – let us know if you have one –  and shared on a pot luck basis
  • Competition will be played to Mike Hillman or winter tournament rules.

Tea will also be in a 1952 style, and we need some volunteers who are handy with a Victoria sponge or an egg and cress sandwich. And we are trying to find as many playable wooden rackets as possible. If you have an old racket in the attic or the garage, please let us know.
Finally, let Roy or Bob know (by e-mail preferably) if you will attend and play, as it would be good to have some idea of expected numbers. Also please advise Bob (rjmachin@gmail.com) if you can provide cake/sandwiches on the day.
We look forward to seeing you on the 2nd June, so dig out your ‘whites’ and wooden racket and enter into the ‘Spirit of 1952’.

Summer Competition Dates

Summer competition dates now posted on the website. First Mike Hillman is next Sunday (15th April) and the catering list is up in the clubroom, awaiting volunteers.

Let the games begin…

Baked potato tournament

Roy writes: On Sunday 5th February at 10.00 a.m. we will be holding our last Winter tournament followed by baked potatoes. Barry Todd is in charge of the tournament and Lynda Mott is coordinating the baked potatoes and trimmings.

If you are able to bring along some of the trimmings, e.g. coleslaw, grated cheeses, butter etc. etc. it would be a great help. Please contact Lynda on 01730-895220 or e-mail at mottlynda@yahoo.co.uk

Have a great tournament.
